I gave my boys Mini Instax cameras knowing full well at some point I’d want to use them myself. That was two years ago and now is the time. I’m taking on the 100 Day Project for the third year in a row. Check #the100dayproject to see more creativity than you can imagine. Projects range from illustration to sewing to writing to yoga to photography. My first two attempts didn’t go very far, mostly because I chose to do yoga-related projects. The yoga parts were great but I didn’t dig taking photos of myself doing yoga so both times I petered out by the 1/3 mark. The funny thing is that I’ve successfully done two 365 photo projects!
My project this year is 100 Days of Instax Mini photos and it is my first foray into the world of instant film. By a pure stroke of beginner’s luck, I loved my very first shot. Subsequent days haven’t gone quite as easily. I’m trying to limit myself to 3 takes. The project has already shifted from simple photos on black or white to backgrounds that might help tell the story. I hadn’t anticipated this shift but I like it.
I’m learning a ton about the Mini 9 but I’ll save my learnings for a later post, maybe when I’m done (if I’m done) with the 100. Here is my first week of images — follow along on Instagram at @tarawanders #tarainstapix.
2.100 The infamous “falls” of Klamath Falls are neither impressive nor visible year round. But I caught them today. And a cute gif of some kiddos while we were at it.
3.100 I decided it was okay to shake up the background for day number 3 due to a new Noonday Collection mini product launch. That decision helped turn this photo project in a slightly different direction, where I could go beyond shooting the mini print on black or white and where the background might become part of the story.
4.100 There are definite limitations to this medium and I ran into one of them on this day. This is my least favorite image so far, though I do like the stripes on stripes part. This project has taught me that I really seem to have a thing for stripes.
5.100 Jack and the Giant Blueberry. This blueberry was so big we had to look up the World Record for largest blueberry. I think this one got eaten before we could actually compare it to the record holder, oops. Also and importantly, the blueberry was so big my son was willing to be photographed with it — which is rare lately.
6.100 My son found this deer skull on our property and when I helped him hoist it over his head I touched something squishy on it. Lets not ever talk about that part again. My eldest agreed to be photographed two days in a row and that is amazing.
7.100 Circles in circles on circles on circles.
A group of lovely and talented photographers post seven(ish) photos on the seventh of the month — next up is Renee Stengel, do hop on over to see the underwater(!!!) beauty she’s been making.
